Making a Mask

I could not resist picking up the Umbrella Man die. To justify yet another die purchase, I needed to find different ways of using this die. I took the clear plastic packaging material from the die and used the die to to cut it. I ended up with a clear plastic mask with both positive and negative images to use.

I got out my trusty ink blending tool and Weathered Wood Distress Ink to ink up a blank manilla tag.

Once I was satisfied with the coverage, I temporarily mounted the positive image of the man to the tag.

I inked up a Hero Arts background stamp and stamped over the mask to cover the tag.

Once this was complete, I removed the positive mask and laid the negative (cut out) mask over the tag and secured to my work surface. I inked up the belnding tood with Chipped Sapphire and tapped over the opening to add some color to the Umbrella Man.

~~He reminds me so much of Mr. Steed from The Avengers, so I decided to get out all of my mystery/crime/espionage related word stamps (Yes, I have such a collection) and stamp over his image.~~

Here we have the finished product...

Any of these steel-ruled dies can make masks. You can also cut images from fun foam and make stamps. Get out those dies and find new uses for them!

Alcohol Ink Hodgepodge

I started out with the best intentions and planned to do a pure Tim Holtz technique, but ended up putting my own touches on this month's tag.

I cut a tag from Ranger's Glossy Paper.

I squeezed a drop of yellow alcohol ink onto the tag and hit it with a blast of canned air to spread it out.

After adding a succession of drops and spreading them out, I ended up with a this:

Inspired by the brillant colors of the poppies in Martha Stewart's Living Magazine this month, I added
orange and rose colors to the tag.

I found the air drying a bit hard to control on my slanted art area, so I pulled out my trusty Blending Solution.

I dripped it onto the tag and pounced the ink with a felt pad on the Bending Tool.

Once I was happy with the blend of colors, I got out my black Archival Ink pad. I used a Hero Arts cling stamp on the tag.

I slipped on my last image, so a little repair was in order. I took the same image and stamped onto a scrap of glossy paper. With a flash of inspiration, I poured a little drop of alchol ink onto the side of the scrap and quickly used a paint brush to color in the stamped image. This worked quite well.

I cut out the flower and used pop dots to add it to the tag. I also added a second smaller stamp.

I printed out a sentiment and mounted the tag. All it needs it a bit of fiber or ribbon...

This was actually the first time I have used alcohol ink on the Ranger Glossy Paper. I have used it a lot with the with the Blending Tool on surfaces like metal, plastic and glass. One of my favorite projects was inking the tin that I use to hold my original collection of Adironack colors.

I stamped over the alcohol ink with black Brilliance Ink and heat set it. Stazon Inks will not work. To protect the ink work, I covered the tin with acrylic sealer.

Be careful, inking is addictive!

Dressing Up Water Stamping

For this month's technique, I thought I would try Water Stamping. I took one of the blank manila tags and inked with various shades of pink Distress Ink.

The covered tag ended up like this:

I chose a flourish background stamp (This one is from Hero Arts) and inked it with Distress Embossing Ink.

Once I had it inked, I spritzed the stamp with water using a Mini Mister.

I stamped this over the tag and dried it with a heat gun. It was a bit more subtle than I liked. I think that a stamp with bolder lines stamped right away on a much wetter tag would possibly have worked better. It is quite a lovely effect, though.

I used the Sewing Room Alterations die and cut the dress form and spool from chipboard.

I painted the "wood" parts of each die cut with a Pitch Black paint dabber.

Once I saw this die, I knew that I wanted to reach back into my supplies and use some lovely Hanko Washi paper and their quilting technique. I cut the body portion of the form out in foam and glued it onto a second piece of chipboard. (Don't worry about the spotty looking glue - it will be covered).

Washi Paper

I placed the form, foam side down, onto the wrong side of the Washi paper. I cut around the form, leaving enough of an edge to be folded under the form (similar to fabric applique). I clipped the areas where there were curves. I took the edged and folded them to the back of the form and taped them down.

This is a fun technique, although simpler shapes work best.

I wrapped the thread spool with a snippet of embroidery floss. I went into my stash for some clear buttons from Tim Holtz when he designed products for the now-defunct Junkitz company. You can now get similar buttons from Hero Arts. I glued these buttons down onto more of the Washi paper with Diamond Glaze. I printed out a sentiment to complete the tag...

A Touch of Texture

I love adding texture to my paper crafting projects and the Tim Holtz embossing folders from Sizzix make it very easy to do so. For this St. Patrick's Day themed tag, I used the Wood Grain folder. The jumbo sized tag is longer than the folder, so I cut a slit in the top to fit the tag inside and ran it through my Sizzix Big Kick.

Once the tag was embossed, I used my ink blending tool to apply Frayed Burlap and Brushed Corduroy Distress Inks to enhance the wood grain. This is truly one of my favorite embossing folders!

I found a small scrap of textured green paper in stash. To add a bit of gloss to the project, I applied Forest Moss Distress Ink to the paper using a Direct to Paper technique, swooshing the ink onto the paper.

Once I covered the piece of paper to my liking, I applied clear embossing powder over the entire piece and heat embossed it to a glossy finish. The wetness of the Distress Inks work well with this technique.

Since I don't have a shamrock punch or die, I used a heart shaped Sizzix die to cut three leaves and hand cut a stem.

To finish up the tag, I printed out a sentiment and matted it with the rest of my glossy green textured paper.

I mounted it onto the tag with foam tape, glued on my "shamrock" and added a bit o' ribbon. I also inked the edges of the tag with a bit more of the green ink.

After completing the Twelve Tags of Christmas last year, I became quite comfortable using the ink blending tool. I was familiar with using the similar tool for applying alchol inks with the felt pads, but had not used the foam pads for applying Distress Ink. I was adding color to my projects by running the edge of my paper along an ink pad. This was a bit hard to control and also wore out sections on my ink pads. I find that the blending tool is easier to control and adds shading and definition to projects.

To use the tool, you tap the foam pad onto an ink pad. You start with the tool off of your project (it helps to use a non-stick Craft Sheet) and make circular strokes from the sheet onto your project. I used a leftover tag from the Christmas tag challenge.

You can apply as much or as little as you like. I also like to use the blending tool to change the look of patterned papers. You can soften a loud print or make it more interesting by applying inks to it. I had an old piece of Anna Griffin paper in my stash that was looking a little dull. I applied Tattered Rose to the edges and now it looks like something that would make a lovely Valentine.

I also like the way ink can add definition to a project. I had a plain Rosette (yes, we will be getting this Sizzlets die!) made from a print that I did not particularly like.

I inked up the tool with Fired Brick and applied it to the Rosette. I like the new version much better:

To finish up the tag, I added more Fired Brick and Barn Door Distress inks to the edges. I stamped a script stamp over the tag with black ink.

I used the Tim Holtz' Alterations Winged heart die to cut a design.

I added these pieces to the tag along with a popped up Valentine's ticket stamp. After adding a little more ink to the tag, I ended up with this:

Welcome to a new feature here at Jazzy Crafts. For the next few months, we will be posting some instructions and samples inspired by Tim Holtz' book, "A Compendium of Curiosities." If you are like me, you probably have many supplies sitting at home, unused. When I challenged myself to complete Tim's annual Twelve Tags of Christmas last year, I realized that I was not making good use of the Ranger and Sizzix products that I had on hand. When I did not have some of the products (and I really don't have them all), I made substitutions with other items. We will be doing this as well as we work our way through several of the techniques in the book. I hope that you'll join me and try some of these techniques.

Bo Bunny Box Project

Hi Everyone:

It has been a while since I posted on the blog, but I'm still around. I'm not much of a crafter myself, but recently had idle time and asked Jasmine if she had a craft project I could work on. Not surprisingly she did and so I have created my first masterpiece in paper! She gave me a craft kit from Bo Bunny to create a 6 inch square box. The box kit was quite a bit of fun for me and allowed me to use my manly construction skills along with a little "guided" creativity from Bo Bunny. My box is not exactly like their pictured example, as I decided to change a couple of small details. It's the perfect project for the "paint by the numbers" crafter like me, but would also be a very fun project for the experienced crafter too.

The instructions you follow are not perfect, but adequate for most people. For example, I was not sure how exactly to do the hinge for the top, but found that placing strips of paper on both the top and the bottom was the way to go. It was how the sides and bottom were attached to each other, so I figured I'd do the same for the lid. You also have to move that piece of chipboard forward a bit to make a good lid for the box. If you wanted to make the box a tad more sturdy so it would stand up to a lot more use, I would consider using slightly thicker chipboard and putting fabric strips on the hinge instead of paper. Younger crafters could do this with a little construction help from Mom and Dad.

The pictures I used were printed from iPhoto on our iMac using the Epson PictureMate Dash. iPhoto allowed me to give a slight Antique look to the pictures which I thought better matched the old fashioned look of these papers. The PictureMate dash also makes extremely durable archival quality prints that stand up to long term light exposure and even moisture better than store bought prints, which is why we sell that printer at Jazzy Crafts.

I used a dot roller for some of the adhesive needs, but would recommend a glue like 3 in 1 or Zip Dry for the pictures, outside edges of your paper, and the chip board cutouts. Essentially anything that might be subject to a little extra wear can be glued. If you get too much glue on the edge that oozes out, then just roll it off with your fingers before it dries completely. You need sand paper, good scissors like the Tonic Micro-Serrated type I used, a circle cutter is nice, and a Tonic paper trimmer and Score-It board are nice additions too. I found that a brown marker was the easiest way to darken the edges of the chipboard and it produces a nice finished look to the project's exposed edges.

Overall it is a fun craft project that produces a usable box that can be displayed openly for everyone to enjoy. The box could be used for a gift, for storing photos up to 4x6, or for just about anything you would put in a decorative box. I have to say I really loved doing this project and now have the skills to apply to other areas as well. We have these and other project kits available at Jazzy Crafts all the time. Jazzy Crafts meets Tim Holtz

I'm finally back on track after CHA and our visit from Dove of the East. I'm going to be blogging all the new products I got as they arrive at the store. Look for the first ones tomorrow. In the meantime, I wanted to let you know that I ordered ALL the new distress inks, dies and embossing folders by Tim Holtz. Can't wait to get them in. AND coolest of all, I got a free die signed by Tim himself - without waiting in any line! (some folks waited for hours)

Jazzy Crafts Goes International

Hi All:

Jasmine is down at CHA checking things out and ordering new items for the store. Since she's away, I wanted to let you all know about a special event we'll be having at our store on Tuesday, February 2nd from 5-8pm. Designer Brandi Lung-Gill along with Dove of the East will be coming to our store in Castro Valley. There will be a free "Lights of Paris" Make 'n' Take and a very special one time trunk sale of Dove of the East products. It will be your chance to see much more of their line of beautiful international themed papers and embellishments. Certainly more than we have room for in our store.

Come by and check it out. Enjoy a little craft time with friends and have some international treats too. We recommend calling ahead for reservations just to be sure we can accommodate you for the Make 'n' Take. Certainly feel fee to just drop in to check out this very special sales event.

Epson now at Jazzy Crafts!

Hi Everyone!

I am happy to announce that Jazzy Crafts is now carrying the Epson PictureMate Dash compact photo printer. I've been checking out small photo printers for a while in order to find one that I felt was right for our customers. The Epson PictureMate Dash is it!

This printer is fantastic for making prints up to 4x6 that are smudge, scratch, water, and fade resistant. The photos are perfect for scrapbooking or framing and will last up to 200 years in an album. All at an affordable print price. Just think! Better quality, longer lasting prints than those kiosks you go to without the hassle of driving or waiting. This printer is small enough to take with you anywhere, so you can instantly share prints directly from your camera or memory card with friends and family. You can crop, zoom, fix red eye, create a B&W or Sepia photo, and much more without a computer. Of course you can use it with your Mac or PC too.

I've been playing around with our printer for a couple of days now and I'm very impressed with the quality of these prints. They are fantastic! Color and B&W photos come out great with vibrant colors and exquisite detail. I can tell you this is one of the simplest printers I have ever used. It's so easy to set up that my tech challenged mother-in-law could do it! :-)

So if you've been thinking about a great, inexpensive printer to use with your digital camera, the the Dash is for you. Stop leaving those great pictures on your computer and print some out so others can enjoy them too.

What about large format printers or scanners? Well, we don't have the room to carry these, but we can order them for you if you like. We can also order printer cartridges, and we will begin carrying other printer supplies soon. Wow! Check out these cool pony bead bracelets that our guest teacher Flip will be presenting in October. They are made with stretchy string and you'll have a choice of several designs. The first class is Oct 4 for the flat design style. The second class is Oct 11 where you will do a 3D style. Once you've learned these basics, you'll be ready for our advanced classes coming later for designs like these:

New Scouting Line

Check out these new Girl and Boy Scout lines that just arrived at Jazzy Crafts from K & Company. The BS paper was delayed but all the embellishments are really cute and include Daisys, Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes for Girls and Cubs, Boy, Venturing and Eagle Scouts for the boys.

Grand Re-Opening

Yesterday was our Grand Re-Opening with our newly remodeled building. We got new paint, tile accents, awnings and FINALLY a light-up Jazzy Crafts sign.

Our first Craft Camp

Well I just finished leading my first craft camp at Jazzy Crafts! I couldn't have done it without the help of my super assistant Maddy. Thanks Maddy! We spent the week doing all kinds of crafts, playing games, going to the park and topping it all off with an ice cream sundae today. It was a blast and got a thumbs up from all our campers.

1st Day of Charm School

Yesterday was our first day of charm school. Yes, it was as exciting as the first day of Kindergarten. Julie taught us how to make these cute flowers and showed us other fun designs we can do now that we know the technique. Next week we'll be doing dangle charms also made with beads using basic jewelry techniques you can also use to make other items like earrings.

Jazzy Crafts New Web Site

Hi Everyone!

I just thought I'd let you know that Jazzy Crafts now has a new web site up and running. It's the same address, but a different experience. Of course, if you got to this BLOG via that site, then you've already seen the new version. If not, you can click on our logo on the right or www.JazzyCrafts.com to go directly there.

One of my favorite features of the site is our new interactive calendar. The calendar will allow you to quickly see what classes are coming up, but also get details about the classes that were not available on-line before. The calendar is also constantly updated as we make changes, so you'll always know the latest. If you're looking for a time to do "open crafts" or book a party, you can quickly see if the time is available.

We've also got a craft gallery going that is better than the old one and will become even better as time goes on. We'll try to keep you up to speed on new products via the site, as well as through this BLOG and our mailing list, so you'll have plenty of ways to keep up with what's going on in the store.

Needless to say, this has been a fun experience...except when I lost my first two sites... and I've learned a lot about web development...and the importance of backups! As I learn more, we'll be adding functionality to the site as well. We hope to be able to bring on-line class and party sign-up features in the near future, but who knows what else we might do.

Loves Me, Loves Me Not

Friday night was our Loves Me, Loves Me Not mini album class with "Rep to the Stars" Cory Phillips! What a blast we had! Everyone was begging Cory to do another class soon. We used Basic Grey's Bittersweet paper line with their Eclectic mini album and even got to use Glimmer Mist which is brand new to Jazzy Crafts to make this adorable book. Look for more mini album classes soon!

Malice in Miniature at Jazzy Crafts

We were honored Sunday to have the talented Margaret Grace(on the left), author of Malice in Miniature, and better known as Camille Minichino, in our store. Camille is a long time Castro Valley resident who has just released the third book in her Miniature Mystery Series. She signed autographs for us and we made these darling miniature vases with FlowerSoft, a great new product we have from England.

Mr. Jazzy goes to CHA

Well it looks like the first post to this blog is going to be mine. I'm Scott and I'm married to the owner of Jazzy Crafts, Jasmine, aka "Jazzy". Jasmine, Rita, Julie, and I all got back from CHA late Monday - actually we'll call it early Tuesday! Jasmine is busy with additional ordering and other "business stuff", so I decided to take the lead and get our new blog going. You'll be hearing from her, Rita, Julie and others on the team as we move forward with the blog and figure out what you want to hear about. We've got A LOT of new things we want to share with everyone and new products coming to Jazzy Crafts real soon.

The show itself was incredibly fun and educational, even for a guy that isn't all that crafty! I even made a craft of my own during the one craft class I was designated to attend. Check out the picture of my sock monkey bag. A big thanks to the gals from WhenCreativityKnocks.com for hosting a great class. I knew how to use glue and scissors going in, but that was it. Thankfully that was most of what I needed to know, but I did learn a very basic back stitch in order to make the mouth and eyebrows for my sock monkey face! It turned out pretty good and shows how easy it is to give a simple bag a fun personality.

I admit it. I groaned and whined about having to do a class using Petaloo flowers. I'm a guy and that's what we do when it's not our idea. I also have to admit that it turned out to be fun! Don't get me wrong, Petaloo has a fantastic product that can be used a million ways to embellish anything. I'm just used to telling customers about them, not using them myself. I usually leave the crafts to Jasmine, Rita, and Julie!

As for the rest of the team, they were all learning about new products and finding new and fun things to do. Be sure that we'll be coming up with some new craft classes in the near future and we'll have some additional choices for our young crafters to choose from too. Jasmine, Rita, and Julie will be posting to the blog soon and it will keep on coming. Check back soon!
